| Project: This box design was
commissioned to market a cloth material after-shower towel called Kap-Wrap. The
box required a logo and had to include product photos (supplied by the client),
descriptive text, diagrams and a die-cut area to display the actual texture
& colour of the material. Kap-Wrap was to be marketed at a medium to low retail through department stores and drug marts so the look of the packaging had to reflect that price point. As with most packaging jobs, I began by blocking out the 6 panels into its regions of importance and then proceeded to define the logo: I used two distinct typefaces with characteristics that worked well together, (Fritz Quadrata and Scheherezade). The latter font had flowing serifs and descenders that wordlessly communicated the twirling, wrapping motion needed to use the product while Fritz Quad exhibits a stylish, lower case compliment. The remaining elements of the box were designed to have a linear appearance, contrasting with the logo. Some personal market research (a trip to my local drug mart), revealed that most bath related products were sold in blue packaging: So, a dark green was chosen as the main colour to make Kap-Wrap stand out from a sea of blue and yet still have a cool, aquatic feel. The photos, supplied by the client, with poses based on my comp sketches arrived towards the end of the project. Budget constraints eliminated the use of a professional studio shoot so 35mm prints became an intense retouching exercise. Each picture required extensive colour adjusting and masking to replace the background and define edges that were blurred or indistinct. Kap-Wrap was one of those jobs where you make the best of what you have within the supplied budget and time constraints. The rear of the box featured very simple line drawings illustrating the motions used to put on the towel cap. Bilingual text, a repeat photo, UPC bar code and company logo complete the basic layout. |
