Project: Create a family of labels for a line of dips and spreads with Greek origins, flavours and recipes. The client was a small, family run business that had been successfully selling their unique food products through local supermarkets and delis.
Initially, word of mouth was propelling their sales but they had been using square, desktop printed labels with generic fonts to identify their products. As new, upscale sales venues were needed to expand their business, the necessity for professionally designed labels became apparent.
From my initial meeting with DIPZ, it was determined that the designs had to be circular, feature the established company logo, illustrate the main ingredients (with an emphasis on natural content), and have a ‘Greek’ appearance that presented itself as being ‘home made’. Some elements were already predetermined by the client: The existing, unaltered DIPZ logo had to be located in the upper quadrant, while adequate room had to be assigned for the bilingual ingredients text and the background colour was to be a specified Pantone cream.
I began the project by researching ancient Greek art, sculpture & architectural decoration which led me to create a rough, sketchy border based on various Greek plate artwork. The ingredient illustrations were rendered traditionally in coloured pencil using a loose, sketchy style and further textured on system with a transparent bitmap. I combined the DIPZ logo with a contemporary banner to accent the ‘home made’ text and keylined the product name to make it more visible against the illustration. The identity of each product was further enhanced by changing the unified colour of the border and product name throughout the range.
