Project: To design a family of 3 natural source skin care products with the main ingredient being Vitamin E. This is probably one of the nicest design solutions I’ve had the pleasure to work on for Swiss Herbal Remedies and the irony is that very few people in Canada actually got to see the finished products in the end.
The container colour was pre-determined by what was available from the manufacturer, so whatever I created had to work on a dark blue background. I instinctively knew that the design would have to be very simple, probably printed reverse white with a limited amount of colour. With that in mind, I chose an elegant letter ‘E’ to be the centre point of the design and added simple text and graphics above and below it. A small burst of colour accents the text in the form of a Monarch butterfly which delicately recalls images of softness and nature.
When I began the project, Swiss’ marketing department were only able to acquire a single pump-style bottle sample in blue, which meant that the majority of the project was presented for approval as rendered images on flat artboards. However, the final, approved samples required that 50 of each container be professionally mocked up for a prospective vendor in Korea. 150 blue containers were hurriedly procured from the supplier but a tight shipping deadline suddenly became an issue. This left me no option but to have a local screen printer print the white portion of the design, (including the ingredients and directions text for the rear), on to clear adhesive film. Unfortunately, there was no time to test varying ink consistencies and the clear film proved to be difficult for the printer to work with, requiring that I touch up the majority of labels by hand. Each label also required the application of a colour butterfly decal, individually cut from clear film that I produced in my studio. Ultimately, the shipping deadline was met, the vendor was pleased and everyone breathed a sigh of relief...
